Holton Sixth Grader Wins School Geography Bee!

For the past twenty years, the sixth grade of Holton-Arms has participated in the annual Geographic Bee sponsored by The National Geographic Society. It is an exciting event for the girls, many of whom were surprised by how much they really know! Last year over 45,000 schools participated across the United States. Holton’s 2013 Geography Bee was held on January 13 and 14. All of the sixth grade girls participated in seven rounds of difficult questioning on topics such as U.S. Geography, U.S. Cities, U.S. Historic Places, Cultural Geography, Continents, World Geography, and Odd Item Out where contestants had to choose the one answer (a country) that did not belong.

Eleven girls emerged as finalists: Emily Ewing, Anu Desai, Nina Nichols, Jill Gusek, Micaela Lamas, Rachel Blackwell, Keshini Maynard, Bianca Barth, Stephani Weiss (second place winner), and Christina DeNovio (third runner-up). Congratulations to this year’s winner, Skye Worster! Skye took a qualifying test for the Maryland State Championship and will receive the results in March. An award ceremony was held at the Lower School Gathering.
