For the past twenty years, the sixth grade of Holton-Arms has participated in the annual Geographic Bee sponsored by The National Geographic Society. It is an exciting event for the girls, many of whom were surprised by how much they really know! Last year over 45,000 schools participated across the United States. Holton’s 2013 Geography Bee was held on January 13 and 14. All of the sixth grade girls participated in seven rounds of difficult questioning on topics such as U.S. Geography, U.S. Cities, U.S. Historic Places, Cultural Geography, Continents, World Geography, and Odd Item Out where contestants had to choose the one answer (a country) that did not belong.

Listen Up! Music is a Language - Grade 3 Trip to The Kennedy Center
The third grade had a wonderful trip to The Kennedy Center yesterday to see the National Symphony Orchestra. Listen Up! Music is a Language is a full orchestra concert that explores how music inspires the imagination and speaks to us in many ways. The third graders enjoyed a repertoire by some of the world’s greatest composers and the concert also showed how the language of music can be scripted or improvised. We were delighted to be accompanied on our trip by instrumental teachers, Jon Hansen and Sarah Winston.

Lower School Community Service Fair
The snow days this past weekend
gave the Class of 2020 a few extra days to develop their marketing plan for why
fellow Holton-Arms students should choose to be passionate about their
respective non-profit organizations. The girls decorated posters, wore paraphernalia,
and even developed a “pitch” for non-profits that they feel strongly about and
lined the hallways of the Lower School to share their passions with their
fellow panthers. Groups included the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Wounded Warrior Project, March of Dimes, and the Navy Seal Foundation.

Grade 7 Holton/Landon Egg Drop
On Friday, January 31, seventh graders collaborated with their
Landon peers on a fun-filled “egg-drop” competition. Working in small groups,
students were given straws, tape, paper, and one egg – with the goal of making
the most protective casing, strong enough to protect the fragile egg even after
being dropped from a six-foot step ladder. Congratulations to Pooja Addala,
Arshia Arora, Alexandra Carioti, and Eva Saville for representing the Holton
half of the winning team!
Please enjoy this video that captures the spirit of the day.

POTUS Predicts Winner of Super Bowl XLVIII
No, not that POTUS. But the Holton (Guinea) Pig Of The United States demonstrates the same decisiveness needed to be the leader of the free world. Take note as he carefully evaluates his options before committing to the team he believes will be the winner tomorrow in the Super Bowl.
Good luck to both teams and thanks to the Class of 2021 for sharing their class pet video with The Scene!
